I thought I would spend this post concentrating on a couple of really memorable artwork from the last month of art adventures.

Sans légende Untitled (2011-12) – Annette Messenger

I nearly missed this in the exhibition. Hidden away in a back room behind the fire escape, I caught the flickering light out of the corner of my eye and walked towards its shadows. The floor was strewn with objects wrapped in cinefoil, with roving spotlights throwing their shadows up against the wall – a dog growling, ready to pounce, a lone Giacommetti figure, standing among the rubble. A clock projected onto the wall marked the passing minutes. Annette Messenger really captured the witching hour in the foreign metropolis, where you lay awake in bed, afraid of the dark both outside and within.

Oceania High Low – Michael Johnson

This was the highlight of the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes for me. I was envious of my friends who were off exploring the Melbourne Art Fair, so a wander through the AGNSW was my consolation. It took me a while to identify the diagonal horizon line, this work captured the gentle ebb and flow of the ocean and the sublime beauty of nature.

Untitled (Heath Bankia) – Alice Couttoupes

Entitled Eponymic Emperialisms, Alice Couttoupes exhibition at Chalk Horse Gallery was a beautiful juxtaposition of fine ceramic work and photographs of the ceramics positioned on faces of quintessential WASP youth. This work had such a lovely presence, and given my recent fascination with foliage, really took my breath away.
