So I’ve been living down in Melbourne the past few months, and life has been pretty hectic. Somehow I have managed to squeeze in some great art, and thought I’d concentrate on the most memorable here.
Haines and Hinterding – Geology
I don’t know if anyone else caught their alternative universe back at the AGNSW for the Anne Lander Award a few years back. I remember they had these strange twigs acting as joysticks that let you explore their created world. Anyhow, this takes it to another level. The screen was cinema size huge, and this time you flew through the world controlling it Wii style by your own movements. Took me a while to master, but I loved flying through the mountains. Very reminiscent of 2001 Space Odyssey with all those sinister black cubes floating about. Hello Hal…..are you there?
Alexis Danko – A(void) laughing
I had a great time looking around this exhibition at the MCA. I wasn’t that familiar with Alexis Danko’s work before, and I found it rather hilarious. Especially this work. Plastered around the opening walls of the exhibition, I pissed myself laughing. Brilliant.
Naomi Eller – If not stones then bones
I met Naomi Eller briefly whilst admiring Amarna at MONA during Dark MOFO, and then went and saw her exhibition at Heide whilst I was living in Melbourne. Her objects oozed a dark sensuality, and looked like they had been teased by a loved one, maybe even slightly tortured.
David Bowie is – at ACMI
David Bowie is an incredible artist. I was blown away by this exhibition, what a career. It was great to hear and see all the stories behind the elaborate costumes and choreography, which have been lost behind the lights and cameras. I thought about it for days afterwards, few of us have that level of drive or ambition.
